Uniting Minds: KDU and IET Ignite a New Era of Collaboration
On 4th September 2024, the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), met with global executives from the Head office Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) United Kingdom and key figures from the IET Sri Lanka Network. This significant gathering was held in collaboration with the 30-year celebration of the IET Young Professionals (IET YP) Sri Lanka Chapter. The event was hosted by IET On Campus of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, marking a special milestone in the celebration.
KDU’s engineering faculty is renowned for its commitment to excellence in education and research. The university’s engineering programs are distinguished by their rigorous curriculum and a strong emphasis on both practical and theoretical knowledge. KDU is known for producing highly skilled engineers, both military and civilian, who are well-prepared to meet governmental requirements, industry demands, and contribute to technological advancements. The university’s robust industry connections and focus on research ensure that students receive an education that is both relevant and forward-looking.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is one of the world’s leading professional institutions for engineers. With a global presence and a reputation for excellence, IET is dedicated to promoting the engineering profession and advancing technology for the benefit of society. The IET is renowned for its rigorous standards, influential publications, and global network of professionals. Its expertise and resources make it a pivotal organization in the engineering field, recognized for fostering innovation and supporting professional development across the globe.
The meeting brought together global and local executives from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). From the global team, Ms. Tony Claire Allen, Chief Engagement and Growth Officer – IET, Mr. Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head and Director – IET India, and Ms. Varsha Kothari, Manager of the South Asia Community – IET were present. The IET Sri Lanka Chapter was represented by Dr. Tharaka Mohotti, Chairman; Prof. Anuradha Jayakody, Secretary; Eng. Ravi Rupasinghe, Treasurer; and Eng. Naleen Jayasooriya, Vice Chairman. Additionally, the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka were represented by Eng. Nimantha Madhushan, Chairman; Eng. Induwara Amal, Immediate Past Chairman; and Eng. Shankarnath Suthakaran, Secretary.
The primary aim of the gathering was to explore and strengthen the collaboration between KDU and IET, focusing on several important aspects of their partnership. The Vice Chancellor and IET representatives engaged in a discussion about the remarkable performance and volunteerism for the internationally reputed Engineering body displayed by IET On Campus KDU. The enthusiasm and dedication of the IET members of KDU were acknowledged for showing high levels of engagement and commitment.
The discussions extended to the incorporation of research initiatives and the enhancement of soft skills among students. Both KDU and IET recognized the value of aligning research efforts with the global expertise offered by IET and emphasized the importance of developing soft skills. This is expected to enrich the educational experience and better prepare students for the challenges of their future professions.
A significant topic of the meeting was the potential for collaboration between IET UK and the Annual International Research Conference (IRC) of KDU. The discussions explored how joint research projects and knowledge exchange could be encouraged to utilize IET’s UK network and expertise, thereby enhancing the research capabilities of KDU. Additionally, curriculum matters were discussed, with a focus on ensuring that KDU’s programs remain relevant and aligned with industry trends and global standards.
In recognition of the exceptional contributions of IET on Campus KDU, the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS) presented a token of appreciation to the IET representatives. This token served as a symbol of gratitude and represented the strong connection between IET networks and KDU, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines their relationship.
The event concluded on a high note, celebrating the successful partnership between KDU and IET.
