Undergraduate students of Intake 39 of the Data Science and Business Analytics degree program at Kotelawala Defense University conducted a community project on January 19th, 2023. The aim was to promote the importance of learning mathematics, ICT and convey the career opportunities for 57 students from grades 9 and 10 at Kandawala Maha Vidyalaya.
The project, which was sponsored and supervised by Dr. S. Adihetty, consisted of career awareness session, motivational talk , set of math related games and other entertainment activities. The undergraduate students used age-appropriate language to convey the importance of data science and provided practical examples of how it is being used in the business world to enhance operations.
The principal and teachers of Kandawala Maha Vidyalaya were influential in helping the undergraduate students to carry out the project successfully. During the motivational talk, the undergraduate students emphasized the importance of mathematics and its role in data science and business analytics.
The project was well-received by the grade 9 and 10 students, who appreciated the opportunity to learn about industrial opportunities from the perspective of undergraduate students. They were impressed by the undergraduate students’ knowledge and enthusiasm, and many expressed an interest in pursuing their careers, especially in the software and data analytical industry.
Overall, the community project was a great success, thanks to the efforts of the undergraduate students from Kotelawala Defense University and the support of the principal and teachers of Kandawala Maha Vidyalaya. By providing practical examples and insights into the world of data science, many of them were able to inspire the next generation of data scientists and analytics. The project served as an excellent way to promote the importance of data science, artificial intelligence, and mathematics.
