KDU’s 1st International Research Conference for Medical Undergraduates 2023 (IRC Medicos 2023) was held on the 17th of March 2023 at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, KDU, Rathmalana. Major General Milinda Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest along with many distinguished guests including keynote speaker, Vidya Jyothi Prof. H Asita de Silva (Senior Professor of Pharmacology, Director, Clinical Trials Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya), Brigadier DCA Wickramasinghe USP USACGSC, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration), Air Cdre (Prof.) Namal Wijesinghe, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Brigadier RGU Rajapaksha RSP psc, Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Prof. CL Gunasekara, Dean, Faculty of Research and Development.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Empowering Medical Students to Strengthen the Field of Medical Research” focusing on the importance of research in building the careers of medical students who are yet to discover their own path in the field of medicine. At today’s conference, students were very privileged to have the opportunity to hear from the keynote speaker and distinguished guest, Vidya Jyothi Prof. H Asita de Silva who enlightened them about the ways of forming and conducting research and the many hardships to overcome during the course of the research process. There was a total of 12 scientific research presentations and 5 poster presentations showcased by the students of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, University of Kelaniya and University of Peradeniya. This was an excellent platform for the medical students to present at the event to have insight into the vital role of research.

The students who displayed the best oral and poster presentation were awarded certificates at the closing ceremony. All students who showcased their research were presented with a certificate as a memento of their talent and participation in the event.
