GOAL 14

Life Below Water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

In a university context, this goal can be approached through various academic disciplines, including environmental science, marine biology, oceanography, and policy studies. General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) contributes to the goal through research and innovation, curriculum integration, public awareness, collaboration, policy-making and advocacy.

KDU play a vital role in conducting research as well as projects to better understand marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and the impact of human activities on oceans and lakes. It promotes initiatives such as beach cleaning campaigns and lake preservation and maintenance programmes. The undergraduates and staff representing various faculties and clubs take the initiative in arranging beach cleaning programmes which make the marine environment safe and sound. Several steps are taken to preserve and maintain the “Kandawala Lake” next to the university premises which impacts heavily on aquatic ecosystems maintaining biodiversity in the surrounding. The university encourages student involvement in marine-related projects, internships, and extracurricular activities by promoting awareness and actions on underwater sustainability. It also hosts seminars, workshops, and outreach programmes which help raise public awareness about the importance of protecting life below water.
