GOAL 12

Responsible Consumption and Production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Responsible Consumption and Production aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, encouraging responsible resource use, waste reduction, and the adoption of environmentally friendly practices across industries and communities.

The General Sir John Kotelawala University (KDU) plays a crucial role in promoting responsible consumption and production practices, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals. As a higher education institution, KDU strives to foster a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff, influencing their behaviours and habits on and beyond the institution.

Key initiatives undertaken to promote SDG 12:

  1. Waste Management: Develop comprehensive waste management plans, promoting recycling, composting, and waste reduction programs on the university. Both students and staff are encouraged to minimize waste generation.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Implement energy-efficient technologies and practices in campus buildings.  Invest in renewable energy sources, such as solar panels to minimize the expenditure on energy consumption.
  3. Sustainable Transportation: The use of environmentally friendly modes of transportation, such as walking, and public transportation, is encouraged for staff and students. Shuttle buses are offered to staff and students to commute to work/ university.
  4. Curriculum Integration: Develop courses and programs that focus on sustainable business practices, environmental science, and ethical consumption. Integrate sustainability principles into existing courses across disciplines.
  5. Awareness and Engagement: The staff, students and faculty are educated on ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ by organizing awareness campaigns, seminars and workshops.
