Promoting good health and well-being within a university setting is a paramount commitment aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3. The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) recognizes the integral role that a healthy and supportive campus environment plays in the overall well-being of students, faculty, and staff. Especially, as an higher education institution that caters for the tri-forces and the police of the country, KDU understands the significance of promoting both mental and physical wellbeing of its students (both day scholars and officer cadets). Moreover, the university also maintains the KDU Hospital, in Werahera which is dedicated to extend its services to the larger community. 

Furthermore, through campus clinics, counseling services, and health awareness campaigns, the university aims to create an atmosphere that fosters not only academic success but also the holistic development and happiness of every individual. By integrating SDG 3 into KDU policies and practices, the university aspires to cultivate a culture of well-being, ensuring that the university community thrives both academically and personally.

Health Center

The KDU Health Centre stands as a cornerstone of well-being, offering comprehensive healthcare services to nurture the physical and mental health of its university community. With a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, the center provides accessible and compassionate care to students, faculty, and staff. From routine check-ups to health education, the center prioritizes preventative health measures and timely interventions. Committed to fostering a healthy campus environment, the Health Centre at KDU is an integral part of its commitment to ensuring that everyone has the resources and support needed to thrive academically and personally.

Surgical and Hospital Expenses Insurance cover for staff

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University provides Surgical and Hospital Expenses Insurance cover for Academic and Non-Academic staff who are serving at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the University Hospital (UHKDU). It covers staff members for Inpatient care, including surgical procedures, hospitalization expenses, and diagnostic tests. Maternity benefits, covering childbirth, and newborn expenses. Emergency services, including ambulance fees and emergency treatment. Pre-existing condition coverage, ensuring adequate protection for staff with pre-existing health issues.

Accident Benefits Insurance cover for the Students

KDU provides Accident Benefits Insurance cover for Students. This insurance coverage provides temporary disablement benefits, permanent disablement benefits and death benefits for students. It also covers areas such as loss of income, accidental death, permanent total disablement, permanent partial disablement, inpatient care (including surgeries and hospitalization expenses) and diagnostic tests. The key is to understand these provisions thoroughly to maximize the benefit during unforeseen incidents. University Hospital

The 889-bed hospital comprised of all the ultra-modern facilities with cutting edge technology to provide around the clock emergency and trauma care and specialized treatment of diseases of all the branches of medicine, surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology. The hospital is staffed by dedicated team of healthcare professions to provide the best quality care to the patients. It also facilitates the training of medical and para-medical professionals, Biomedical Engineers and Biomedical Technologists. The UHKDU stands out as a unique hybrid model of healthcare service in the country with its public, all services are free of charge to the patient and private wings which offers all care service for an affordable price in a more luxury, comfortable and friendly atmosphere. The KDU website provides dedicated phone numbers to get in touch with the appointed counsellors for the day. This service is available 24/7 and anyone could reach for help in emergency situations or schedule an appointment with the counsellor as per requirements. Staffed by qualified and empathetic counselors that includes a social psychologist, behavioural psychologist, clinical psychologists and consultant psychiatrist, the helpline plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and caring campus environment.

Further, with the commitment to provide emotional support and guidance, the helpline offers confidential and accessible counseling services to address a spectrum of personal and academic concerns. Whether navigating academic stress, mental health challenges, or personal issues, individuals can rely on the helpline as a trusted and judgment-free space.
