GOAL 15

Life on Land

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

2022

"Life on Land," underscores the importance of preserving terrestrial ecosystems, maintaining biodiversity, and promoting sustainable land management practices. The goal aims to address the interdependence between human well-being and the health of the planet's land-based ecosystems.

In alignment with this goal, The General Sir John Kotelawala University (KDU) is dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation. The university attempts to integrate sustainable land use principles into campus planning, research, and educational programs. Through initiatives such as creating green space, and community outreach, the university actively contribute to the protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems. One such initiative of the university is the maintenance of ‘Kandawala Lake’. The university conducted a project to clean and conserve the polluted water resource which is located near the university premises, and at the completion of the project, it became a site that attracts different species of birds and animals and created new biodiversity by becoming a home for varied species. Further, the university has taken the necessary steps to ensure the maintenance of a green space within the university premises by replanting trees regularly which is eye-pleasing as well as contributes to the larger goal of promoting sustainability.

By instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness our students (both day scholars and officer cadets), faculty, and staff, the university aims to be a catalyst for positive change, promoting a harmonious coexistence with nature and working towards the objectives outlined in SDG 15.
