GOAL 2

Zero Hunger

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

2023

“Zero Hunger” is a worldwide commitment established by the United Nations to eliminate hunger, improve food security and promote sustainable agriculture. This ensures that the undergraduates and university staff have a healthy and balanced diet with various options as their food preferences. By endorsing food safety, the university plays a vital role in not only nourishing its nation but also encouraging a sense of well-being and impartiality, contributing to the global effort to eradicate hunger.

University welfare canteen

The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) runs a welfare canteen for the day-scholar students and staff where they provide food at a concessionary rate. The minor staff at the university is given the ability to provide food for the canteen giving them an opportunity to gain an extra income. The prices of food and beverage items are affordable and of half-the –rate when compared to the outside food outlets. Thus, it creates and facilitates the university in reaching the sustainable development goal - ‘zero hunger’.

Cadet Mess / Officers’ Mess

The officer cadet mess provides food free of charge to the undergraduate officer cadets whereas the officer’s mess provides food for the officers, academic and administrative staff of the KDU at a concessionary rate. Crops such as coconut, jack fruit, mango, plantains and some other vegetables cultivated in the university premises (Rathmalana, Werahera and Sooriyawewa) are also used to prepare meals in daily consumption of the cadets and the officers. Such plantations schemes are maintained and checked by the curators and staff assigned to uplift agricultural aspect of the university.
