Professor Kapila Perera was enlisted into KDA Intake 2 on 28th September 1981, and later he joined
the Sri Lanka Navy. He became the first Officer Cadet to be graduated with a First Class Honours degree
from KDA (conferred by the University of Moratuwa). Subsequently, he received a doctoral degree in
mechanical engineering. He obtained a Masters Degree from University of California Davis in 1989 in
Mechanical Engineering, followed by Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1993 from the same University.
He joined the University of Moratuwa in 1995 as a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering on his
retirement from the Sri Lanka Navy. During his academic career, he also served as a Director of Academic
Studies of KDU from 20th March 2008 to 01st May 2009.
Prof. Perera's research interests include Turbulent Heat Transfer and Combustion Modeling, Energy
Sources, Renewable Energy Technologies and Co-generation. Later, he became a Professor of Mechanical
Engineering, and in 2017, he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. In 2020,
Professor Kapila Perera was appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Education.
