The Inter-Faculty Annual Netball Tournament – 2023 was held at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), featuring 120 talented players from 10 faculties namely the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences, Faculty of Technology, and Faculty of Criminal Justice.
Brigadier DCA Wickramasinghe USP USACGSC, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence & Administration), and the Chairman of Sports Council of KDU opened the tournament ceremonially at 0900 hours on 1st of March 2023. All the teams featured intense matches where the players gave their best efforts to secure a victory. The teams representing the Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities were selected as the semi-finalists. The semi-final matches were closely contested, as the Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities won against the Faculty of Computing while the Faculty of Engineering secured the victory over the Faculty of Law showcasing their team spirit and sportsmanship. The day ended with the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities advancing to the final.
The closing ceremony of the Inter-Faculty Annual Netball Tournament – 2023 was held on 2nd of March 2023 at KDU. Major General Milinda Peiris RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Vice Chancellor of KDU, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The final match between the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities was a thrilling spectacle which displayed the players’ true sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. After a hard-fought battle, the Faculty of Engineering emerged as the champions of the Inter-Faculty Annual Netball Tournament 2023 while the Faculty of Management, Social Science and Humanities became the runners-up.
The following players were awarded trophies and titles for their outstanding performances during the tournament:
- D/S KKLY Kaluarachchi from the Faculty of Engineering was crowned as the Netball Queen of the Tournament.
- D/S ID Gomes from the Faculty of Engineering was named as the Best Shooter.
- D/S TD Alpitiya from the Faculty of Management, Social Science and Humanities was awarded the title of Best Defensive Player.
- Best Center Court Player was awarded to D/S KASK Athukorala from the Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities for the skillful playing displayed during the game.
The tournament was concluded with all spectators filled with excitement and joy, as the KDU undergraduates exhibited excellent sportsmanship qualities and a strong fighting spirit throughout the event.
