Research Isolation and characterization of novel functional ingredients including secondary metabolites and bioactive peptides from marine or terrestrial organisms using organic solvent or enzyme assisted extractions. Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical prospects of the isolated extracts or bioactive components are interested to evaluate with the advanced and recent biotechnological and chemical tools interest.
In vitro cytotoxicity assays (MTT assay)
Recent advances in biomedical research and drug discovery system, the expansion of preclinical laboratory investigation have resulted in improved knowledge in cancer research. Preclinical studies are important because they represent the first step toward the development of a new therapeutic compound, providing important information on the mechanism of action, anti-tumour and antiproliferative activity with toxicology studies can be guided its subsequent clinical development. The selection of appropriate preclinical experimental models, most reflective of the complexities of different cancers, may help to identify the most promising therapeutic agents that would sustain the clinical evaluation.
In the case of a development of a new anti-cancer agent begins with the evaluation of its cytotoxicity activity and antiproliferative activity against a panel of malignant/cancer cell lines. Usually, during the first stage of screening, testing is carried out on the three cell lines that are frequently the most sensitive way of determining a candidate.
Therefore, KDU-CARE has been established the facility to undertake in vitro cytotoxicity assays. The sample/candidate/s would be natural products, lead compounds and manufactured drugs in considering for evaluating their cytotoxicity activity and anti-proliferative activity. Based on requested parameters such as the concentrations of the active compound/extract that cause: 50% cancel cell growth Inhibitory concentration of the sample (IC 50), growth inhibition of 50% of the cells (GI50), or total growth inhibition (TGI), or cytotoxic killing of 50% of the cells (LC50) will be assessed.
