KDU Metro Campus Ushers in New Era with Inaugural ICT Undergraduate Programme
For the first time in the history of the KDU Metro campus, an undergraduate degree programme was inaugurated on January 30, 2024. The Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), ceremonially inaugurated the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) degree programme of the Faculty of Technology in the KDU metropolitan campus.
Formerly known as the Miloda Academy of Financial Studies, the KDU metro campus is one of the most valuable additions to the university. The establishment of an undergraduate degree programme on the Metro campus was therefore historic. The ICT programme has been conducted at the KDU Sooriyawewa campus since its inception. The relocation was carried out with the blessing of students and their parents to provide more industrial exposure to students and to optimally utilise KDU facilities.
The rector of the metropolitan campus, Air Commodore Rajinth Jayawarde USP MSc MDS MSSD BA ndc psc welcomed the vice chancellor and all the other guests and highlighted the significance of the event in his welcome speech.
The Vice-Chancellor stated in his address that there will be differences between the southern campus and the metropolitan campus in terms of the facilities and opportunities available. Yet he said the doors of the Ratmalana campus are open for students to come and use the facilities available to them. He went on to state that, with the relocation of the programme to the commercial capital of the country, programme is strategically positioned to foster closer ties with industries and businesses, providing invaluable networking and training opportunities for students.
Prof. Prasanna Premadasa, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, delivered the thank-you speech and thanked the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence and Administration), and the Rector Metro Campus for their assistance and taking the strategic decision to relocate the ICT programme from Sooriyawewa to the Meto campus.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence & Administration), Brigadier DCA Wickramasinghe, USP USACGSC, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. KAS Dhammika, and Rector of Kurunagala Campus, Commodore SR Roopasena Rwp Rsp psc.
The inauguration event was followed by a tour of the facilities, showcasing the advanced ICT laboratories and technical resources available to students at the KDU Metro campus. The event concluded with a networking session and refreshments, allowing students to engage with senior officials of the university.
