Project Sisu Saviya – A significant community service initiative by the Rotaract club of KDU
For the past seven years, the Rotaract Club of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University has embraced the project “Sisu Saviya” empowering schools in rural villages to help them lead better lives. This year’s project focused on Galbada Athuruwella Maha Vidyalaya, Induruwa, a school with 150 students from underprivileged backgrounds.
Led by President Anagi Gunasekara and the board, the project aimed to provide long-term support. The chair- persons of the project were Rtr. Yuvindu Ratnayake and Rtr. Ishini Vedasinghe. The funds for the project were collected through many initiatives by the club and university students. Among them were Concerts like Rota fiesta, Food stalls etc. Mrs. Shiromi Damayanthi, school principal, appreciated the Rotaract club’s efforts in renovating the school science lab due to safety hazards caused by a damaged floor and compromised ceiling, ensuring a positive impact for current and future students.
The project encompassed three key phases:
Donation Phase: The Rotaract Club provided 150 students with study and dry ration packs to support their education and families’ well-being. Dry ration pack included 2 Kg packet of Rice, 1 Kg of Dhal and 1 Kg of onions. The club also donated four whiteboards and a first aid kit for student’s safety.
Science Lab Renovation: Recognizing the school’s need for a proper science learning environment, the Rotaract Club undertook a three-month renovation for the science lab. This comprehensive effort culminated on the May 1st with a fully renovated space, including a repaired floor, ceiling, and walls, as well as the donation of essential science lab equipment.
Leadership Session: A leadership session on April 8th, 2024, engaged students, empowering them to discover their inner leadership potential and overcome challenges, focusing on their physical and mental well-being.
The grand opening ceremony on May 2nd marked the project’s completion. The initiative witnessed remarkable participation from club general members, Army, Navy, and Police officers, including Officer in Charge Rotaract Club LCdr DRD Ranabahu and OIC Kosgoda Division Mr. Deshabandu along with Captain L.S Arachci. This successful initiative by the Rotaract Club of KDU exemplifies the power of community service in uplifting lives and fostering a brighter future for rural students.
