“TALK TO UNI”
On the 28th of June 2024, the Engineering Students’ Society of Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) marked a significant milestone with their inaugural event titled “Talk to Uni.” Held at the FGS Auditorium, this event was meticulously organized and garnered substantial support from various eminent personalities in the field of engineering and academia.
“Talk to Uni” was conceptualized as a panel discussion aimed at fostering insightful conversations between aspiring engineering students and seasoned professionals. Backed by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) Student Chapter, the event aimed to provide a platform for students to gain valuable insights into the engineering industry and career prospects. Moreover, the event helped to uplift the quality of the IESL student chapter at KDU.
The event was graced by notable figures, including Professor Ranjith Dissanayake, President of IESL, and Eng. Dushyanta Wanniarachchi, Chairperson of the Young Members’ Section of IESL. Their presence underscored the significance of the event in connecting academia with industry. Commodore Hasantha Dassanaike, Director Naval Design at Naval Headquarters, brought a unique perspective from the defense sector, enriching the dialogue with practical insights. Professor Thushara Weerawardane, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, shared his extensive experiences from both academia and industry. Eng. Isira Naotunna moderated the panel discussion, offering insights into industry practices and professional standards for practicing engineers. All panelists shared their industry experiences and practices, emphasizing how new graduates can effectively apply these insights in their professional careers.
The event saw active participation from the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Defence and Administration, Heads of Departments, senior military officers, professors, senior academic staff, and students from the Faculty of Engineering. Their contributions enriched the discussions, making the event highly significant for all attendees.
The event attracted an enthusiastic audience of approximately 300 engineering students. The interactive panel discussion covered a wide array of topics, ranging from emerging trends in engineering to career advice and the importance of professional networking. Students actively participated in Q&A sessions, eagerly seeking advice and clarification from the esteemed panelists.
“Talk to Uni” concluded on a high note, with participants expressing gratitude for the enriching experience. The event succeeded not only in disseminating knowledge but also in fostering a sense of community among engineering students and professionals. As the first event organized by the Engineering Students’ Society of KDU, it set a promising precedent for future initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry.
