THE SQUADRON COMMANDERS MESS NIGHT INTAKE 40
The First Mess Night of Intake 40 of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was held on 10th August 2024 at the Beiges Bistro. This prestigious event was graced by the Squadron Commander of Intake 40, Major WMWGNC Wickramasinghe psc MSc (DSS) BSc (Mil Studies), who served as the Chief Guest. The event also saw the presence of Major Sameera Samarasinghe Lsc, MBA, BSc, JP (WI), President of the Mess Committee and Staff Officer II of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies. Additionally, Troop Commanders, the University Under Officer, and senior Officer Cadets from Intakes 38 and 39, along with the Officer Cadets of Intake 40, participated in this memorable occasion.
The Mess Night was meticulously organized to reflect the long-preserved customs and traditions of the military. It featured a five-course menu, symbolizing the high standards of military decorum. The evening was enriched by musical accompaniment, leading up to the loyal toast and a total of four traditional toasts, including a tribute to His Excellency, the President. These toasts are not merely formalities but are deeply embedded in military tradition, representing the unity, loyalty, and respect inherent in military culture.
Preserving these military customs and traditions is of paramount importance. They serve as a living link to the past, instilling values such as discipline, honor, and camaraderie among Officer Cadets. Events like Mess Night offer invaluable opportunities for Officer Cadets to experience and internalize these values, ensuring that they carry forward the proud legacy of their predecessors.
The success of the Mess Night was a testament to the guidance and supervision provided by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, the Squadron Commander of Intake 40, and the Troop Commanders. Their dedication ensured that the event was not only a formal dinner but also a profound educational experience, reinforcing the core principles of military life.
