Inter-Faculty Debating Championship for the Vice Chancellor’s Trophy – 2024

The Inter -Faculty Debating Championship for Vice Chancellor’s Trophy is a significant event in the Annual Calendar of the Moot Court and Debating Society of the Faculty of Law, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. The Final Rounds of the competition in the year was held on the 28.08.2024, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, KDU.
The Preliminary Rounds and the Semi Finals were held on the 22.08.2024, with the participation of teams from the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Criminal Justice, and Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies. The finalists were the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Law, who vied for the Championship on 28.08. 2024.The debate was extremely interesting and showcased the analytical, oratory and presentation skills of both teams. The erudite team of judges comprised of Col. Nalin Herath, Dicrector (Research) Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka, Former Ambassador Mrs. Syani Calyanarathne and veteran journalist Mr. Asoka Dias,who provided invaluable insights to both teams.
The Award Ceremony was graced by Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc as the chief guest. Certificates of Participation were given to all participants and the Semi Finalists. The Faculty of Law emerged Runners Up, whilst the Faculty of Engineering won the Trophy as Champions.
The event provided a platform for undergraduates of all Faculties to develop their critical thinking skills, public speaking skills and present material in a factually and academically sound footing. Participants, volunteers amongst the undergraduates of the Faculty of Law, and the academic and non-academic staff of the Faculty contributed immensely to the success of this event. The Ceremony concluded with refreshments served in the foyer of the FGS where students of all participating Faculties and staff interacted in the spirit of felicitation and fellowship.
