AFUR’25: A Night of Unity and Reflection at KDU

The third edition of the KDU Iftar was named AFUR’25, took place on March 18, 2025, at the KDU Cafeteria, bringing together a diverse and united community at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). This hallmark event served as a celebration of faith, unity, and mutual respect during the sacred month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is a time for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and fostering meaningful relationships. It is a period that transcends religious boundaries, bringing people together to embrace the values of generosity, gratitude, and coexistence. AFUR’25 exemplified this spirit by uniting students, faculty and esteemed guests in a meaningful and memorable evening.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV USP psc, who attended as the Chief Guest and Brigadier RKARP Rathnayake RSP USP psc, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Admin) as the Distinguished guest. The gathering was further enriched by the presence of Alhaj Ash Sheikh Nusrath (Al-Haqqani), In charge Youth and Education Division of the All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama, who addressed the attendees as the Guest of Honour. His speech emphasized the spiritual significance of fasting and the values of patience, humility and gratitude that it instils.
The Deans of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies Col AHR Hasantha RSP psc and Deans of the Faculties, Director Information Technology, Adjutant of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Officers, Academia and Students graced the iftar as invitees.
AFUR’25 was meticulously organized by students of Intake 41, showcasing their dedication and commitment to fostering an inclusive and enriching environment at KDU. Their efforts in curating this event demonstrated the university’s commitment to celebrating diversity and strengthening communal bonds.
The Iftar gathering was more than just a meal; it was an opportunity for individuals from different backgrounds to come together, share experiences, and strengthen relationships. The event concluded on a note of camaraderie, reinforcing the values of compassion, respect and unity that define the spirit of Ramadan.
