KDU HOSTS THRILLING INTER-UNIVERSITY (NON-STATE) KDU SUPER 10’S RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP 2025

The Inter-University KDU Super 10’s Rugby Championship 2025, organized by the KDU Rugby Club with the support of the KDU Rotaract Club, became a much-awaited highlight of the KDU sports calendar. The thrilling final encounter took place at the KDU Rugby Ground on the evening of Wednesday, 2nd April 2025. A massive crowd comprising Officers, Other Ranks, KDU undergraduates, invited university representatives and their supporters gathered to witness the final showdown. Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV USP psc MMaritimePol BSc (DS) the Vice Chancellor of KDU added prestige to the grand finale by gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Creating an exciting battleground atmosphere for young, enthusiastic ruggerrites after a five year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other administrative challenges, this year’s Inter-University (Non-State) KDU Super 10’s Rugby Championship was organized under the visionary leadership of Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV USP psc MMaritimePol BSc (DS), the Vice Chancellor of Kotelawala Defence University and the guidance of Brigadier Pradeep Rathnayake RSP USP psc, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration).
More than just a competition, this event served as a powerful platform to strengthen bonds, foster brotherhood and promote sportsmanship, teamwork and skill development among undergraduates of KDU and other distinguish universities.
The battle for rugby supremacy has shown by the 7 Non-State University Teams namely KDU, CINEC, IIT, Open University, Ocean University, SLIIT University Kandy and SLTC. After series of intense clashes among the competing teams, medals, certificates and trophies were claimed by the following universities:
2nd runners up owned by SLTC after the competitive match with the SLIIT University Kandy
1st runners up trophy secured by IIT after the competitive match with the KDU team.
The champions trophy of the tournament owned by Kotelawala Defence University rugby team showed the finals score as the 24-07. Day-Scholar Hasnaka Higgoda was sworn as most points scorer of the tournament, he has scored 54 points including 8 tries and 7 conversions. The best player of the tournament owned by Day-Scholar Binath Sanjana.
The exhilarating event concluded with a proud moment of recognition as the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration) and the Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies (FDSS) presented awards and certificates to the victorious teams. This marked the end of a spectacular tournament that truly celebrated passion, perseverance and the indomitable spirit of rugby.
