Community Service Initiative by Intake 39 MBBS Cadets: At HelpAge, Ratmalana, Sri Lanka

Intake 39 MBBS cadets of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) engaged in a community service project on 18th May 2025, and that undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the elderly community at HelpAge Sri Lanka. This initiative involved renovating the elderly care center, and the programme was conducted under the guidance of Col. (Prof.) A. Balasooriya, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, KDU, and with the invaluable assistance of KDU administrative officers, particularly the Commanding Officer (Administration), Lt. Col. RT Ganegoda. HelpAge Sri Lanka provides a safe and supportive environment for the elderly people who need caring and love in the absence of their beloved ones, and this initiative by the KDU cadets could enhance the living conditions of the occupants with a brighter, peaceful and more welcoming atmosphere. The teamwork and enthusiasm displayed by the cadets who are going to become the future healthcare professionals showed their commitment to community involvement and social responsibility while fostering a deeper sense of empathy and service among the participants. The smooth functioning and the profound success of the project were a part of a shared responsibility of each and every administrative officer in the medical faculty and the university at large.
