National Workshop on the Application of Multidimensional Metrics in Academic Research 23rd – 25th, June 2025
A three-day National Workshop on the Application of Multidimensional Metrics in Academic Research was successfully held at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), organized by the KDU Library. The event brought together a diverse group of scholars and professionals from multiple disciplines to engage in an in-depth exploration of advanced research evaluation methods and analytical tools.
The workshop featured a panel of distinguished resource personnel and was led by the key resource person Professor R. Balasubramani from the Department of Library & Information Science, Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu. He was supported by Dr. J. Arumugam, Librarian at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; Dr. K.S. Abu, E-Learning Publishing Team Lead at Alison, Ireland; and Mr. Ritesh Kumar, Senior Research Fellow at Bharathidasan University. Together, their diverse expertise provided participants with a strong blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
A total of 25 participants actively engaged in the sessions, representing a wide spectrum of institutions: General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, University of Colombo, Eastern University of Sri Lanka, University of Peradeniya, University of Jaffna, Sabaragamuwa University, University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine, the National Library of Sri Lanka, and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board. This diverse participation reflected the growing recognition of research metrics as a crucial area across disciplines.
The workshop provided comprehensive coverage of essential topics such as bibliometrics, scientometrics, and altmetrics, with a focus on practical applications for research enhancement. Sessions included training on citation metrics, bibliometric laws, and search optimization tools, along with in-depth demonstrations of major citation databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, LENS.org, OpenAlex, and Dimension AI. Participants gained hands-on experience with patent analysis tools (e.g., Google Patents, LENS.org) and data visualization platforms including Orange, Coconut LibTool, VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, and HistCite.
Additionally, the workshop highlighted the importance of maintaining ethical standards in academic writing and research, with practical guidance on tools and techniques for ethical literature collection and analysis. The integration of AI tools was also a key focus, emphasizing how artificial intelligence can streamline data analysis, literature reviews, transcription, and visualization, thereby enhancing productivity and research accuracy.
This workshop not only deepened participants’ understanding of multidimensional research metrics but also empowered them with innovative tools and strategies to elevate the quality and impact of their research. It served as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, skill development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
