EMPOWERING FUTURE LEADERS: TWO INSIGHTFUL MILITARY LECTURES AT FGS AUDITORIUM
As a vision of Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Def & Admin) and the Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies to enhance the knowledge of officer cadets on modern military developments, two enriching guest lectures were conducted on 27th and 28th June 2025 at the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Auditorium, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
On 27th June, the officer cadets of Intake 41 had the privilege of attending a comprehensive session on Modern Naval Warfare, delivered by Lieutenant Commander Manaranga Thilakarathne, Director of studies at Regional Center for maritime Studies, KDU. The lecture explored the evolving nature of maritime combat and the advanced technologies shaping naval operations today. From the tactical role of missiles and torpedoes to the significance of Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), the session offered deep insights into current naval capabilities. Particularly noteworthy was the discussion on stealth technologies in modern ships and crafts, and how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cyber warfare are being integrated into naval strategies. The lecture concluded with an overview of emerging trends in global naval warfare.
On 28th June, Lieutenant Colonel G.I.D.D. Dharmaratne RSP USP USACGSC, the commanding officer of the 4th Amour regiment delivered an eye-opening lecture on Technological Advancements in Armour Design and Manufacturing. Officer cadets were taken through the evolution of tank technology, understanding how battlefield needs and regional threats shape armoured vehicle design. The lecture also highlighted geopolitical variations in design trends, showcased existing modern technologies, and introduced emerging innovations in the field. This lecture was especially impactful for officer cadets aspiring to engage in armored warfare.
Both sessions provided an exceptional opportunity for cadets to expand their military knowledge, guided by experienced professionals in their respective fields. Events like these not only develop academic understanding but also cultivate strategic thinking and critical analysis of officer cadets’ essential qualities for future military leaders.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the guest lecturers for their time and valuable insights.
