On the 19th of October 2024, in commemoration of the 44th death anniversary of General Sir John Kotelawala, a dengue awareness and prevention initiative titled “Fight Dengue” was organized by KDU along with the Rotaract Club of KDU. This collaborative effort aimed to address the growing concerns about dengue fever in the surrounding areas of the KDU premises and engage the community in proactive measures against the disease. The event commenced at 08.00 a.m. near KDU premises and involved three crucial phases: Awareness, Cleaning, and Inspection.
The Awareness phase was supported by a briefing session held the day prior, on the 18th of October, at the FGS Auditorium, where Public Health Inspectors and Doctors provided valuable information on the prevention and control of dengue. This session also ensured that all participants were well equipped with knowledge about the dangers of dengue and the necessary steps to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The event was more colourful with the active participation from day scholars, cadets, and Rotaractors, all of whom contributed to cleaning and inspecting areas along Airport Road, Kandawala Road, Borupana Road, and adjacent byroads near KDU. The collective efforts in these locations focused on identifying and removing potential mosquito breeding sites, such as stagnant water and unclean surroundings as well as putting up information posters for people to see as part of the broader effort to curb the spread of dengue.
Once the tasks were completed, participants gathered for refreshments, which also served as an opportunity for fellowship and camaraderie among those involved. The “Fight Dengue” initiative highlighted the importance of community engagement in public health efforts and successfully honoured the legacy of General Sir John Kotelawala by promoting a healthier environment for all. The event was organized with the close direction of the vice chancellor of KDU.
