On November 1, 2024, IEEE PES KDU undergraduates spearheaded the second phase of Sip Sathara, an inspiring initiative dedicated to fostering academic excellence and technological curiosity among school students. Designed to enrich the educational experiences of underprivileged students in rural areas, this project was held at Maniyangama Maha Vidyalaya in Avissawella, with the participation of 250 students from Pannila Weerasinghe Maha Vidyalaya, Panawala Ranjan Wijerathne Maha Vidyalaya, and Welangalla Kanishta Vidyalaya. Through interactive, hands-on sessions, the program provided invaluable learning experiences tailored to different age groups, ensuring a lasting impact.
For students preparing for the GCE Ordinary Level examination, the focus was on strengthening their grasp of foundational Electrical Circuits and Electronics. An engaging practical session brought theoretical concepts to life, featuring essential experiments in electronics and a live demonstration of household wiring using an electrical installation board. This hands-on approach not only reinforced textbook knowledge but also enhanced students’ confidence in applying electrical principles to real-world scenarios.
Meanwhile, students from Grades 6 through 8 embarked on an exciting journey into the world of Microcontrollers and Programming. Undergraduates introduced them to Arduino basics through interactive projects, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for technology-driven problem-solving. The session provided a strong foundation for young learners, encouraging them to explore further in the realms of coding and embedded systems.
To make learning fun and engaging, both groups participated in an educational game on Blooket, where they answered questions in a thrilling, competitive format. The top performers were celebrated with special prizes, recognizing their enthusiasm and effort in embracing new knowledge.
In a gesture of goodwill, IEEE PES KDU undergraduates presented each participating school with a bundle of books for their library and electronic kits to encourage continuous hands-on learning. This initiative aims to create a sustainable impact by equipping students and teachers with essential resources to further their academic pursuits.
The day’s events concluded on a high note with a musical session led by the Art Circle of KDU’s Faculty of Engineering. The harmonious blend of music and camaraderie brought joy to both students and volunteers, leaving everyone with unforgettable memories.
The success of Sip Sathara initiative was made possible by the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Dean- Faculty of Engineering and the unwavering dedication of Head of Department, Capt (L) RT Hettiarachchi USP, Programme Coordinator, LCdr (L) MRRA Bandara, IEEE PES KDU Advisor, Eng. (Ms.) RMDSD Ranasinghe, academic staff, non-academic staff, and undergraduates of batches 38, 39, 40, and 41 from the Department of Electrical, Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering. Their collaborative efforts exemplify the spirit of knowledge-sharing and community service, reinforcing KDU’s commitment to empowering future generations through education and technology.
With each phase, Sip Sathara continues to stand as a testament to the power of collaboration and the boundless potential of young minds. Together, we illuminate pathways to knowledge, innovation, and success!
