KDU SHUTTLERS EXCEL AT THE COLOMBO SHUTTLE SAGA
The shuttlers of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) delivered a stellar performance at the Colombo Shuttle SAGA, a prestigious tournament hosted by the University of Colombo from 26 to 29 June 2025. The event brought together top badminton talent across Sri Lanka. It was contested under three categories: Novices (Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles), Invitational University Mixed Team, and Club Tournament Mixed Team.
KDU’s rising stars made a lasting impression in the Novices category, with Day Scholar SHVR Sumanadasa clinching the Men’s Singles title through an inspiring 2 sets to nil victory over his opponent. Continuing his dominance on the court, Sumanadasa then partnered with Day Scholar AHG Hewage to win the Men’s Doubles title (2-1), showcasing teamwork, agility, and determination.
The success did not stop there. In the Mixed Doubles segment, the formidable pairing of Cdt/L/Cpl PK Paranaliyanage and Lady Officer Cadet VA Edirisinghe earned third place, winning the play-off three sets to nil, rounding off an impressive performance in the tournament.
KDU’s grit and competitive spirit carried over into the team formats as well. Both the Invitational University Mixed Team and the Club Tournament Mixed Team events saw KDU finishing as 2nd runner-up, defeating the University of Colombo (3-0) and Kandy Uptown Club (3-1), respectively. This performance further cements their status as a badminton powerhouse on the inter-university circuit, a fact that the KDU community can take great pride in.
With a blend of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship, the KDU badminton team continues to make the university proud.
