KDU Netball Team Triumphs at Horizon Nexus’25 Netball Tournament

“Horizon Nexus 25” a netball championship organized by Horizon Campus, was held on 08 of July 2025 at Horizon Campus Grounds, Malabe. The event was conducted with great enthusiasm and competitive spirit. The tournament, which brought together talented netball players from both university and school levels, celebrating the sport and fostering unity among young athletes, was a true testament to the growing talent and popularity in university netball.

At the university level, ten teams battled it out for the championship title: General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), SLIIT, University of Sri Jayewardenepura , IIT, NIBM, Aquinas, Horizon Campus, APIIT, CINEC and SLTC. The tournament began with a league stage where the teams were divided into two groups of five. After intense matches at the group stages, the top teams advanced to the knockout rounds.

In a thrilling final match, KDU faced the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and after an intense game marked by skillful play and unwavering determination, KDU emerged victorious with a close score of 15–13, securing the championship title.

Adding more glory to the team’s achievement, KDU players claimed several individual awards. Dishara Umayangani was named Best Shooter, Sanuki Athukorala was awarded Best Center Court Player and Vihini Senanayake proudly received the title of Netball Queen for her outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
