Law is one of the disciplines included in curriculum from the inception of the university due to its significance for Armed Forces personnel. However the discipline a summed greater significance at KDU with the establishment of the Department of Law and subsequently the Faculty of Law and the commencement of its four year LLB Degree Programme with the objective of producing legal professionals for the Tri-Services need that arose in the aftermath of Humanitarian Operations The first LLB Programme commenced in the academic year 2011 for Officer Cadets and from 2012, the doors of the Faculty were opened to civilian students as Day-Scholars. Further, the LLB Degree Programme has now attracted Commissioned Officers from the Armed Forces as well as officers from the Sri Lanka Police.

The candidate must have,
Completed GCE (A/L) or Cambridge/Edexcel (A/L) or an equivalent foreign examination in the relevant or immediately preceding year and be qualified for university admission.
- GCE Advanced Level (local): At least two Credit Passes C and one Simple Pass (S) in the following list* in one sitting.
- IGCSE / GCSE (Cambridge) or Advanced Level (Edexcel): A minimum of three “C” passes in the following list* at one and the same sitting at the Cambridge/ Edexcel (A/L) or an equivalent foreign examination.

A minimum of a Credit Pass C for Sinhala/Tamil Languages at GCE (O/L) examination. Selected candidates with foreign A/L qualification are required to obtain a minimum credit pass C for Sinhala /Tamil Language at the GCE O/L examination, within two years from the Enrollment.
