Abbreviated Title: BSc (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Sciences

Welcome to the Bachelor of Science Honours in Medical Laboratory Sciences degree program at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka. This program was implemented in 2013 and presented as 4 year full time degree course.

Advances in diagnostic techniques for over the years have enhanced the development of modern medicine, and enables early diagnosis, monitor treatment and to get a prognostic value of a disease. In parallel to that, the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) is becoming very important as it directly coordinates with the diagnosis & prevention of diseases and facilitates the accurate treatment. Presently, this vital process is being performed by Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs). However, the number of graduates passing out from the universities is not sufficient to meet the demand for skilled workers.  Medical laboratory professionals have many choices of practice settings or career such as hospitals, clinics and commercial laboratories. There are so many opportunities available for qualified laboratory professionals nationally and internationally. 

Under such circumstances General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University decided to start BSc Hons (Medical Laboratory Sciences) degree in order to address the national requirement and the course is being functioning smoothly at this moment with four batches of undergraduate students.

Academic Hours

Consists of 56 course modules with total of 120 credits
One credit equals:

  • 15 hours of lectures. 
  • 15 hours of tutorials/SGD/Clinical Based Discussions.
  • 30 hours of practical skill training.
  • 45 hours of clinical practical/In service training
  • For the research project, 100 hours is equivalent to one credit. 
Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:  

The candidate must have, Completed GCE (A/L) or Cambridge/ Edexcel (A/L) or an equivalent foreign examination in the relevant or immediately preceding year and be qualified for university admission.

  • GCE Advanced Level (local):
    At least a Credit pass (C) for Chemistry and two Simple passes (S) at the A/L examination in Biological or Physical Science Stream in one sitting to enroll in BSc Honours in Medical Laboratory Sciences degree programmes.
  • IGCSE / GCSE (Cambridge) or Advanced Level (Edexcel):
    At least ‘C’ pass for Chemistry and two ‘D’ passes at the Cambridge or Edexcel (A/L) or an equivalent foreign examination in Biological or Physical Science Stream in one sitting to enroll in BSc Honours in Medical Laboratory Sciences degree programme/
