Abbreviated Title: BSc (Hons) in Nursing

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, provides an opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Science Honours in Nursing degree program in Sri Lanka. This program commenced in 2013 and presented a four-year, full-time degree for undergraduates. The degree is recognized by the Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC) and has obtained the registration in SLNC in 2023.

The BSc Nursing (Hons) curriculum is designed to develop a holistic approach to nursing care. The Curriculum encompasses scientific and humanistic foundations for nursing practice and enables the students to develop competencies related to prevention, maintenance, cure, rehabilitation & promotion of health. The BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree awarded is equivalent to exit Level 6 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF). The degree programme is full-time and module-based based with 126 credits allocated to modules. Each academic year consists of two (02) semesters. The academic work consists of lectures and other teaching & learning activities to acquire knowledge in relation to topics in the curriculum and clinical training to acquire competency based skills and attitudes of a nurse. Nurses serving under the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health, private sector or overseas who fulfill the eligibility criteria are eligible to enroll as Lateral Entrants to the BSc degree programme in the first semester of second academic year leading to the award of BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree after three (03) years of study.

Under such circumstances General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University decided to start BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree in order to address the national requirement and the course is being functioning smoothly at this moment with four batches of undergraduate students.

Academic Hours

Consists of 57 course modules with total of 126 credits
One credit equals:

  • 15 hours of lectures. 
  • 15 hours of tutorials/Small Group Discussions/Clinical Based Discussions.
  • 30 hours of practical skill training.
  • 45 hours of clinical practical/In service training
  • For the research project, 100 hours is equivalent to one credit.
Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:  

Direct Entry 

  • Be between 17-24 years of age by the closing date of applications.
    And
  • Be eligible to apply for university admission and have fulfilled the following requirements,
  1. Have a minimum of three Simple (S) passes at the GCE (A/L) examination in Biological or Physical Sciences stream.
  2. Has at least a credit pass (C) for English at the GCE (O/L) examination.
  3. Has passed the Common General Test conducted by the UGC

And

  • Candidates applying with high school diploma should pass SAT and TOFEL examination with a minimum score of 550/120 respectively or IELTS (Academic) with a minimum band score of 6.5
    And
  • Obtains pass marks at the Aptitude & English Language tests, Psychometric test and at the interview conducted by the KDU,
    And
  • A height of four (4) feet and 10 inches or above is required to enroll in BSc Nursing degree programme.

Lateral Entry 

  • Have a Diploma /Certificate in nursing and are registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC)/Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC) or relevant professional regulatory authority in their respective country. 
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years service under the Ministry of Health/ Ministry of Defence, private sector or overseas  at the date of closing applications.
  • Be below 40 years of age on the date of closing applications.
  • Have passed in three Science subjects at the GCE Advanced Level Examination in one sitting or equivalent qualifications obtained in an overseas examination.
  • Have at least a credit pass in English language in GCE Ordinary Level Examination or London O/L Examination or a minimum band score of 6.5 in IELTS (Academic).
  • Have appropriate fitness to pursue the course.
  • Have obtained pass marks at the Aptitude (IQ/General Knowledge/Fundamentals of the Course of Study) and English language test conducted by the KDU along with satisfactory performance at the interview.

Armed Forces and Police as Direct Entrants

Military health personnel serving under the Ministry of Defence who fulfill the criteria listed below are eligible to enroll as direct entrants to the BSc Honours Degree programmes in the first semester of the programme leading to the award of BSc Honours in respective disciplines after four (04) years of study. The applicants should:

  • Have a minimum of two (02) years service under the Armed forces and Police on the date of closing applications.
  • Be below 35 years of age by the date of closing applications.
  • Fulfill the entry criteria for the direct entrants stated as follows,
  1. Have a minimum of three Simple Passes (S) at the (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) examination in Biological or Physical Sciences Stream to enroll in BSc Honours in Nursing degree programme.
  2. Have at least a Credit pass (C) for English at the GCE (O/L) examination.
  3. Have obtained at least 30 marks for the Common General Test conducted by the Department of Examinations.
