The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, provides an opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Science Honours in Nursing degree program in Sri Lanka. This program commenced in 2013 and presented a four-year, full-time degree for undergraduates. The degree is recognized by the Sri Lanka Nursing Council (SLNC) and has obtained the registration in SLNC in 2023.
The BSc Nursing (Hons) curriculum is designed to develop a holistic approach to nursing care. The Curriculum encompasses scientific and humanistic foundations for nursing practice and enables the students to develop competencies related to prevention, maintenance, cure, rehabilitation & promotion of health. The BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree awarded is equivalent to exit Level 6 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF). The degree programme is full-time and module-based based with 126 credits allocated to modules. Each academic year consists of two (02) semesters. The academic work consists of lectures and other teaching & learning activities to acquire knowledge in relation to topics in the curriculum and clinical training to acquire competency based skills and attitudes of a nurse. Nurses serving under the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health, private sector or overseas who fulfill the eligibility criteria are eligible to enroll as Lateral Entrants to the BSc degree programme in the first semester of second academic year leading to the award of BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree after three (03) years of study.
Under such circumstances General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University decided to start BSc (Hons) in Nursing degree in order to address the national requirement and the course is being functioning smoothly at this moment with four batches of undergraduate students.
