Abbreviated Title: BSc (Hons) in Radiography

Welcome to the Bachelor of Science Honours in Radiography degree program at the Department of Radiography & Radiotherapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka. This program was implemented in 2013 and presented as a four-year time degree course.

Advances in medical imaging techniques have significantly contributed to the development of modern healthcare, enhancing the ability to diagnose, monitor treatment progress, and assess the prognosis of various diseases. The field of Radiography plays a crucial role in this progress by providing detailed imaging that aids in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. In parallel, the demand for skilled radiographers is growing, as they are essential in operating diagnostic imaging equipment and ensuring patient safety and care during procedures.

The Radiography degree programme is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of medical imaging techniques, radiation physics, patient care, and the ethical and legal aspects of radiography. The programme aims to develop professional diagnostic radiographers with a high level of skill and knowledge, enhancing the quality of services in the healthcare sector. By fostering academic excellence, the programme seeks to produce radiography graduates who are intellectually and professionally competent, meeting the needs of both the national and international healthcare communities. With growing opportunities in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and beyond, qualified radiography professionals are in high demand worldwide, ensuring a fulfilling and dynamic career path.

Under such circumstances, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University decided to start BSc Hons (Radiography) degree to address the national requirement. The course is functioning smoothly with four batches of undergraduate students.

Academic Hours

Consists of 68 course modules with total of 123 credits
One credit equals:

  • 15 hours of lectures. 
  • 15 hours of tutorials/SGD/Clinical Based Discussions.
  • 30 hours of practical skill training.
  • 45 hours of clinical practical/In service training
  • For the research project, 100 hours is equivalent to one credit. 
Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:  

The candidate must have Completed GCE (A/L) or Cambridge/ Edexcel (A/L) or an equivalent foreign examination in the relevant or immediately preceding year and be qualified for university admission.

  • GCE Advanced Level (local):
    At least a Credit pass (C) for Physics and two Simple passes (S) at the A/L examination in Biological Science Stream in one sitting to enroll in BSc Honours in Radiography degree programme. 
  • IGCSE / GCSE (Cambridge) or Advanced Level (Edexcel):
    At least a three ‘D’ passes for Chemistry, Physics and Biology at the A/L examination in one sitting to enroll in BSc Honours in Radiography degree programme.
