Blood Donors Felicitation, June 19, 2024

“Walk into save lives.”

The annual blood donor felicitation program of University Hospital-Kotelawala Defence University was organized in parallel to World Blood Donor Day on the 19^th of June 2024 at UH-KDU under the theme “Walk in to save lives.”

The event was organized by the Department of Transfusion Medicine, under the guidance of the Consultant Transfusion Physician and the Head of the Department, Dr. Trilicia Withanawasam.

The event was graced by the presence of Vice Chancellor Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS) and former Vice Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris RWP RSP USP VSV LOM ndc psc. Director Medical Services, Brig. Dr. Saman Thilakarathna, Director Administration, Brig. LWSR Weththasinghe of UH-KDU; and Dean Faculty of Medicine, KDU, Colonel Prof. Aindralal Balasooriya, also participated in the event.  

The aim of organizing this event was to thank and honor the valuable contributions of the blood donors and blood donation campaign organizers to the transfusion service. Two knowledge-update lectures were delivered encouraging in-house blood donation (Importance of In-House Blood Donation) and highlighting the blood donors’ nutrition (Feed Your Blood) to be a healthy donor. Further, donor recruitment for the newly established stem cell registry was introduced. 

Tokens of appreciation and certificates were presented to the blood donors and blood donation campaign organizers, appreciating their noble act of donating blood regularly and organizing blood donation campaigns for the Transfusion Service of the University Hospital-Kotelawala  Defence University.
