Workshop on “Discovery of Explosives”

The Department of Management and Finance, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), successfully organized a comprehensive Workshop on Discovery of Explosives on 26 April 2025. This event was graced by Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV USP Psc, the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, as the Chief Guest. The workshop saw active participation of Officer Cadets who are reading BSc in Management and Technical sciences, BSc in Logistics management and BSc Engineering of intakes 41 and 42.
The event featured a distinguished panel of resource personnel from the Sri Lanka Army Corp of Engineers, including Lt Col MJ Salgadu RSP USP SLE, Commanding Officer of the 14 CBRNE Response Regiment, Sri Lanka Engineers; Maj HGLP Jayasekara and Capt GVM Rangana. Their expertise provided invaluable insights into the latest techniques and technologies in explosives detection and response.
The workshop was structured to deliver both theoretical and practical exposure through a series of focused sessions. The program commenced with an introduction speech on explosives and accessories, offering a comprehensive overview of various types of explosives, their characteristics, and the accessories used in detection and neutralization. This was followed by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Equipment Display and Demonstration where participants had the opportunity to interact directly with EOD equipment. The highlight of the event was a live demonstration of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) neutralization at the ground, which provided cadets with a realistic understanding of the challenges and protocols involved in explosive threat mitigation.
The event was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) Brig. Pradeep Rathnayake RSP USP psc, Adjutant Lt. Col Rohan Kumara RWP RSP psc, Head of the department of Management and Finance Dr. Upali Rajapaksha, Lecturer In charge of the event Dr. Namali Sirisoma, Senior Officer I Faculty of Graduate Studies Lt Col Prashantha de Silva , Senior Officer II of Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies Maj Sameera Samarasinghe Lsc, Squadron Commander of intake 41 Maj SD Abeyweera and Squadron Commander of intake 42 Maj Sriyan Wijerathne, Senior Assistant Registrar of the Faculty Mrs. Gayanika Silva, troop Commanders, instructor in charge of the event Ms. Hansi Perera and cadet officers of intake 41 and 42. The workshop was completed with the support of the Dean Faculty of Graduate Studies Colonel Ramindu Hasantha RSP psc.
The Workshop on Discovery of Explosives provided an invaluable platform for officer cadets to deepen their understanding of explosives and develop practical skills essential for their future roles.
