KDU NEW YEAR FESTIVAL – 2025

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University proudly organized its New Year Festival 2025, “සුභவசந்tham 25,” promising a vibrant melting pot of culture and creativity. The event was held under the esteemed patronage of the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS).
Senior Professor Ariyarathna Kaluarachchi from the University of the Visual and Performing Arts contributed his insights alongside others, highlighting the importance of New Year traditions and customs. From traditional performances to contemporary interpretations, the audience was captivated by Sinhala, Tamil, Catholic, Bhutanese, and Islamic songs and dances.
The festival also featured engaging games such as Tug of War and Aliyata Ehe Thabima, fostering camaraderie and fun among participants.
A highlight of the occasion was the Avurudu Kumara and Kumari competition, where representatives from each faculty showcased their talents, competing for prestigious titles amidst cheers and applause. Prizes ranging from flower bouquets to symbolic crowns honored the winners, reflecting the significance of cultural traditions. Day Scholar Rusasi Mapabandara was crowned KDU Avurudu Kumari, and Officer Cadet Madusha Premachandra was crowned KDU Avurudu Kumara.
As the vibrant festivities unfolded, games such as Kotta Poraya, Badaka Deveema, Vikata Edum Tharagaya, Sagaunu Amuttha, Balloon Blowing, Banis Keema, and Musical Chairs further energized the atmosphere. “සුභ வசந்tham 25” truly embodied KDU’s commitment to unity in diversity.

The event took place on 30th April 2025 and was organized by the Officer Cadets and Day Scholars of KDU, under the guidance of the Administration Staff.
