KDU’s Grand Celebration of International Women’s Day: Liya Abimani 2025

The Centre for Gender Equity and Equality (CGEE) at KDU hosted a distinguished celebration of International Women’s Day, “Liya Abimani 2025”, held at the FGS Auditorium with remarkable grandeur. The event commenced with a welcome speech by Director CGEE, Dr. Nirosha Wedasinghe, under the esteemed leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Rear Admiral H.G.U. Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), alongside Mrs. Inoka Weerakoon and the Guest of Honour, Mrs. Jayomi Lokuliyana and Mrs Chanaki Punsara Mallikarachchi. This occasion served as a powerful tribute to women’s empowerment and their invaluable contributions to society.

The event was conducted with the invaluable guidance and support of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration), Major General D.C.A. Wickramasinghe USP, USACGSC, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Senior Professor K.A.S. Dammika, ensuring its seamless execution and resounding success.

The celebrations commenced with the She-novate Creative Corner Exhibition, designed to encourage and support women entrepreneurs within the university. Participants showcased their innovative products in the FGS Lobby, reflecting their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

A thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Krishanthi Anandawansa, focused on key topics such as Women’s Mental Health, Women’s Rights, and Women in Technology in the Workplace. The panel featured distinguished speakers, including Dr. Lakshika Liyanage, Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe, and Ms. Kavindya Baddegama, who shared valuable insights. Additionally, an inspiring speech by Dr. Prasanna Herath from the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences emphasized 10 essential tips for improving brain health.

This year’s event also recognized and celebrated exceptional women for their remarkable contributions across various domains, including Education, Research and Innovation, Leadership, Management and Administration, Social Services, Arts, Entrepreneurship, and longstanding Academic Service to KDU. Special appreciation was extended to KDU current military female officers and servicewomen, as well as dedicated academic and non-academic staff members who have served KDU for over a decade, honouring their unwavering dedication and resilience.

The celebration also featured vibrant cultural performances that highlighted the strength, perseverance, and achievements of women. Traditional and contemporary performances captured the essence of resilience and triumph. Law Faculty and Criminal Justice students captivated the audience with an outstanding drama, showcasing exceptional talent. Additionally, Ms. Esala Erangi from FMSH, Professor Nishantha Kumarasinghe from the Faculty of Medicine, and Ms. Sandhani Sandarenu from FAHS, along with students from the FMSH-TESOL degree program, delivered an inspiring musical performance. The Art Circle of the Medical Faculty also showcased their exceptional singing talent on stage.

The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) Women in IT Special Interested Group extended their support for the event, while the CSSL GenZ KDU Student Chapter, along with students from various faculties, volunteered with remarkable dedication, ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

Overall, KDU’s International Women’s Day celebration was a resounding success, uniting voices and perspectives to champion the cause of women’s empowerment, excellence, and inclusivity
